Suspected Islamist militants reportedly burned over 100 houses in a village in Macomia district (Cabo Delgado province) on Friday, December 21. According to media reports on Monday, December 24, the militants attacked the village of Chicomo at approximately 20:00 (local time), forcing villagers to flee the area. Residents of other nearby villages also reportedly left their homes, fearing that the militants would target them next. Similar attacks are possible throughout Cabo Delgado province in the near term.

Context

The Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Shabaab) group has been responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province.
