Government extends state of emergency in southern Peru until late January; heightened security presence expected

The national government extended a state of emergency in southern Peru along the Apurimac-Cusco-Arequipo corridor, effective for 30 days from Saturday, December 29. Rights of freedom of assembly and home privacy are suspended along the national highway PE-3SY and for 500 m (547 yards) alongside the road from Muyo Orcco to Tiendayoq (Chumbivilcas province). The National Police will patrol the area with support from the military. A heightened security presence and measures are possible and associated transportation disruptions, including checkpoints, cannot be ruled out.  


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate a heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions.
