The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned on Monday, December 31, that much of the country may be subjected to dangerously strong winds and high waves in the coming days. According to the warning, areas around Jakarta, Banten, and West Java could be hit by winds up to 45 km/h (28 mph) through Thursday, January 3. The winds may also produce waves from 1.25 to 4 m (4 to 13 ft) in the Bali, Lombok, and Sunda straits, as well as along the southwestern coast of the island of Java. Some areas, including Pangkalpinang and Bangka Belitung may experience waves up to 6 m (20 ft). The BMKG has warned that conditions will render sea travel unsafe in some areas.
Individuals in Indonesia are advised to monitor local weather reports, obey all instructions issued by the local authorities, and prepare for possible transportation disruptions. Those planning sea travel should carefully monitor forecasts and verify that conditions are safe prior to departure.
