Significant flooding has been reported in parts of the city of Santa Cruz on Monday, December 31, after heavy rains started in the area around 06:00 (local time). According to media reports, the most impacted neighborhoods include Buen Samaritano, Cumavi, General Campero, Villa Primero de Mayo, '24 de Septiembre', La Campana, Internacional, Carlos Laborde, San Francisco, El Triunfo, Plan Cuatro Mil, and Plan Tres Mil. Public bus service has been disrupted throughout the city due to flooded streets. City officials have also activated an emergency plan to assist residents who have been affected by the flooding. Transportation disruptions are expected to continue in the coming hours and days. The rains are expected to subside within the next 24 hours.
Individuals present in Santa Cruz are advised to monitor local weather reports and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
