Flooding and landslides triggered by Tropical Depression Usman have left at least 122 people dead in the Philippines as of Thursday, January 3. Most of those killed by the storm and its effects were in Bicol region; the Eastern Visayas and MIMAROPA regions have also recorded fatalities. Some 25,000 people were displaced by the storm. Dozens remain missing in Bicol and the Eastern Visayas as of Thursday. The death toll may rise over the coming days as search and rescue operations continue in isolated areas affected by the storm. Access to shelter, potable water, sanitation, and medical supplies is limited. Residual power and transportation disruptions are likely to continue in the coming days.


Tropical Depression Usman made landfall in Eastern Samar province (Eastern Visayas region) on December 29, with heavy rains and strong winds affecting the country beginning December 28. The Philippines typically experiences approximately 15-20 tropical cyclones annually from April through December.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, and avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas.
