Myanmar: Cyclone Pabuk triggers rain warnings January 7

Myanmar News Alert

Cyclone Pabuk causes rains and huge waves as it passed through the Andaman Sea January 6; further rain expected in the coming days

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/7/2019, 12:00 AM until 1/7/2019, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Myanmar

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology raised a yellow storm warning on Monday, January 7, due to the passage of the cyclone Pabuk, which brought heavy rains and huge waves on January 6 as it passed through the Andaman Sea. According to local forecasts, further heavy rains are to be anticipated within the next two days, notably in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Magwe, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyarwady, and Tanintharyi regions, as well as in Shan, Rakhine, Kayah, Kayin, and Mon states. The Coco Islands group (Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea) are expected to be the most affected areas by this cyclonic storm.

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, reconfirm flights, obey instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
