In the evening (local time) of Tuesday, January 8, a subway train in Chongqing smashed into protective barrier doors, killing the driver and injuring three others. The cause of the incident is being investigated; however a breakdown of the subway's protective doors between two stations are likely to be the cause of the accident. Three stations along the affected 4 km (2.4 mi) route are out of service as of Wednesday, January 9, while the rest of the metro loop line is still operating.
The CRT (Chongqing Rail Transit) represents the backbone of public transportation system in Chongqing. The 34 km (21 mi) northeastern section of the Chongqing rail line opened on December 28, 2018, and was still under trial operation when the accident happened.
