Seattle (Washington state) will close the double-decker Alaskan Way Viaduct beginning Friday, January 11. Significant traffic congestion and disruptions are expected for a three-week period before a replacement four-lane tunnel is completed. The shutdown will begin at 22:00 (local time) on Friday.


The Alaskan Way Viaduct is an elevated double-decker highway along the western portion of the city serving Washington highway 99. An estimated 90,000 vehicles use the viaduct each day.
