Officials in Davos have authorized several demonstrations to take place in the city center during the World Economic Forum (WEF) from Tuesday, January 22, to Friday, January 25. Demonstrators are expected to gather near the city hall building and additional unauthorized rallies are possible throughout the forum. Protests are also possible in other Swiss cities, including Bern, Geneva, and Zurich, among others, for the duration of the WEF. Heightened security measures and associated transportation disruptions are anticipated in Davos and other cities through January 25.
The World Economic Forum takes place in Davos every January. The forum draws international economists, politicians, and media representatives to discuss solutions to global issues such as international trade restrictions, conflicts, poverty, and the environment. The form has also been the target anti-capitalist protests, which have sometimes erupted into violence.
Individuals present in Switzerland are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities, to anticipate increased travel times due to enhanced security measures, and to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
