A demonstration is planned in Algiers on Wednesday, January 16, in support of jailed journalist Adlène Mellah. The sit-in protest is scheduled to begin at 11:30 (local time) at the Maison de la Presse Tahar Djaout. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area of the demonstration.

Journalist Adlène Mellah was sentenced to a year in prison in December after participating in a rally in support of jailed singer Reda City 16. Mellah is reportedly on hunger strike and, according to officials, his health has deteriorated. An appeals court will hear Mellah's case on January 23.

Individuals in Algiers are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
