A large blizzard is set to hit eastern California from Wednesday, January 16, to Friday, January 18, bringing up to 2 m (6.6 ft) of snow to parts of the Sierra Nevada mountains along with strong winds of 80-125 km/h (50-80 mph). Snowfall estimates range from 15 cm (6 in) at lower elevations to 60-150 cm (2-5 ft) for areas above 2000 m (7000 ft) elevation, and localized totals of up to 2 m (6.6 ft). Most of the snow is forecast to fall on Wednesday and into the morning (local time) of Thursday, January 17.


Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate transportation disruptions (e.g. road closures) and adverse driving conditions (e.g. extremely limited visibility, icy roads), avoid unnecessary travel and keep sufficient food, water, and warm clothing if driving through the area.
