The public sector union ADEDY has called for a nationwide 24-hour strike on Thursday, January 17, to denounce proposed reforms to appointment standards for teachers. Organizers also intend to stage a rally from 11:00 (local time) at the parliament building in Athens. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near the demonstration. Disruptions to business and government services are also possible during the work stoppage on Thursday.
Teachers and students are protesting government-proposed educational reforms and are demanding that the Ministry of Education withdraw the bill from parliament. Demonstrators clashed with police during previous protests on January 11 and 14, and at least one protester was seriously injured after security forces used tear gas and flash grenades to disperse crowds.
Individuals in Greece, and in particular Athens, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate localized transportation and other disruptions, and avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
