Mali News Alert

Suspected jihadist militants kill at least ten people in Inékar-Ouest (Menaka region) January 15; similar attacks possible in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/17/2019, 12:00 AM until 1/19/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Bamako). COUNTRY/REGION Mali

Unidentified armed men attacked a security post and civilians in the village of Inékar-Ouest (Menaka region), located near the border with Niger, on Tuesday, January 15. At least ten people were killed, including members of the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MSA) and civilians. It remains unclear who is behind the attack, however, jihadist groups are highly suspected. Further such attacks are possible in the near term.

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.

The security environment in Mali remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.

Due to the underlying terrorist and kidnapping threats prevalent in the country, all those present in Mali are advised to remain discreet regarding personal details, particularly information concerning nationality, employment, family, etc. Individuals are also advised to avoid public events and places frequented by Westerners, to remain vigilant at all times (especially in local markets, now used by terrorists as recruitment grounds), and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
