Protests broke out in the capital Dakar on Tuesday, January 15, to denounce the recent Constitutional Court decision to reject the candidacy of numerous political leaders for the upcoming February 24 presidential elections, including those of former Dakar Mayor Khalifa Sall and Karim Wade. Demonstrators reportedly burned tires on the Voie de dégagement Nord (VDN), a major thoroughfare of the capital, leading to significant traffic disruption. Furthermore, police forces dispersed protesters gathered at the Sacré-Cœur area of the city. Further such protests are possible in the coming days, notably on January 20, when the Constitutional Court is expected to release the final list of approved candidates. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected around any demonstration site.

Opposition leaders denounce discrepancies in the electoral process ahead of the February 24 general elections, including the decision to block jailed Sall, and other opposition candidates from running for president. Another leading opposition figure, former Minister Wade, will also be unable to contest President Macky Sall in the upcoming elections due to convictions.

Individuals in Dakar are advised to avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, budget extra time to travel within the city due to expected traffic disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
