Recent heavy snowfall continues to cause transportation and business disruptions across Turkey as of Thursday, January 17. Officials closed schools in 20 provinces on January 16 due to dangerous weather conditions, particularly in the central, northern, and eastern areas of the country. Many roads, streets, and avenues have also been closed; the Antalya-Konya highway was also shut down due to heavy snow. At least two people were killed and several others injured. Additional winter weather is forecast across Turkey through Friday, January 18. Further transportation disruptions are possible in the coming days.
Individuals in Turkey are advised to monitor local weather reports, maintain a flexible itinerary, and anticipate cold and adverse weather, transportation and power disruptions, including flight and train cancelations and delays, road closures, and adverse driving conditions.
