Cameroon News Alert

Suspected militants release 36 people kidnapped from two passenger buses in Southwest region on January 17

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/17/2019, 12:00 AM until 1/18/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Douala). COUNTRY/REGION Cameroon

Suspected militants reportedly released 36 people kidnapped from two passenger buses in Southwest region on Tuesday, January 15. Victims were reportedly stripped of their money and belongings and forced to walk to their destination. Further such incidents are possible in the near-term.

Cameroon's English-speaking Southwest region remains tense due to an ongoing separatist movement and conflict between armed groups and the government. Strikes, unrest, and violence has been common since November 2016 and has escalated since October 2017 following a unilateral proclamation of independence.

Individuals in Northwest and Southwest regions are advised to monitor the situation, follow all instructions issued by the local authorities, and remain vigilant for militant and criminal activity.
