A union representing airport security staff, ver.di, announced a hold on further strikes and work stoppages on Thursday, January 17. The union has negotiations scheduled with employers on Wednesday, January 23. Further strike-related activity is possible after January 23 should the two sides fail to reach an agreement. Transportation disruptions, including crowded conditions at airports, are expected in the event of further strikes.
The ver.di union represents approximately 23,000 workers. Strikes and work stoppages were held at Frankfurt (FRA), Leipzig/Halle (LEJ), Dresden (DRS), Hannover (HAJ), Bremen (BRE), Hamburg (HAM), and Munich (MUC) international airports, as well as at Erfurt (ERF) regional airport, beginning Tuesday, January 15. Associated strikes were also held at Düsseldorf (DUS), Stuttgart (STR), and Cologne-Bonn Konrad Adenauer (CGN) international airports on January 10.
Individuals in or traveling through Germany are advised to monitor the situation, confirm the status of their flights, and anticipate congestion and delays at the airport.
