A number of transportation unions are calling for bus and metro workers to hold a four-hour strike on Monday, January 21, to protest proposed changes to European regulations on driving times and rest periods. According to media reports on Tuesday, January 15, hired buses will stop from 10:00 until 14:00 (local time) throughout the country. Metro workers will go on strike during various four-hour periods throughout the day. Public transportation disruptions are expected in major urban areas throughout January 21.
Transportation-related strikes are common in Italy and can be highly disruptive. However, in accordance with Italian law, minimum levels of services must be guaranteed during all strikes.
Travelers in Italy are advised to confirm their travel itineraries and to allow for extra time to reach their destinations. Exercise a high level of vigilance in affected areas, avoid all demonstrations, and follow all official instructions issued by relevant authorities.
