As of Monday, January 21, the largest annual internal migration of the Chinese population is starting as commuters seek to reunite with their families ahead of the Spring Festival, or Chinse Lunar New Year, scheduled on February 5. Around 3 billion trips are scheduled in the next six weeks, until March 1. The Chinese government warned against improper behavior during this period; people caught misbehaving on roads and public transportations, including smoking in public transports, traveling without tickets, using false identification, or reselling tickets, may be fined and banned from rail or air travel.
Travelers present in China are advised to confirm their hotel and transportation reservations, and anticipate crowded conditions.
