On Wednesday, January 23, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism unit arrested eight suspected militants for alleged links with the Islamic State (IS) and for preparing attacks in Mumbai (Maharashtra state) on Holi festival (March 20-21). Security forces also seized several explosive devices and chemicals material during raids held in Thane (Aurangabad).


India faces a high threat from terrorism. In November 2018, an attack in Mumbai, killed nearly 170 people.


Due to the significant terrorist threat, individuals in India are advised to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities and to exercise caution at all times, particularly when visiting sites deemed particularly likely to be targeted in an attack (e.g. public transportation, train stations, ports, airports, public or government buildings, embassies or consulates, international organizations, schools and universities, religious sites, markets, hotels and restaurants frequented by foreigners/Westerners, festivals, etc.), especially in major cities.
