The civic group, Rise for Climate Belgium is planning to hold a protest in Brussels on Sunday, January 27, to call on the EU and Belgian governments to honor its commitment to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Participants are expected to gather at 13:00 (local time) at Gare du Nord and then march towards Place du Luxembourg, located near the European Parliament. Protests are also expected to take place in other urban centers, such as in Mons. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near the demonstration site.
On a related note, thousand of students in Brussels have taken to the streets on January 24 to call for climate change, leading to significant disruptions. Further such protests are possible in the coming days.
The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in which state signatories commit to reducing its country's impact on global warming. The agreement was adopted by 196 state representatives in December 2015.
Monthly related protests have taken place in Belgium since September 2018, notably in Brussels.
Individuals in Brussels are advised to monitor developments to the situation and avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution.
