The Iconoclastic Sect, an anarchist group that claimed responsibility for a December bombing at an Athens church, reportedly released a statement in mid-January threatening to carry-out additional attacks. An explosive device detonated near Saint Dionysios church in the Kolonaki quarter in central Athens on December 27, leaving a police officer and church caretaker injured. A heightened security presence is possible at churches and other points of interest in near term

Attacks against media stations, banks, and government institutions are not uncommon in Greece, and are mostly conducted by anarchist or far-left groups.
