An explosion was reported near a cinema in central Nairobi at approximately 19:00 (local time) on Saturday, January 26, injuring at least one person. Authorities indicate the blast caused minor damage, and police have established a security cordon. Local sources state the explosive device was believed to have been placed in a piece of luggage. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours.

The capital Nairobi recently experienced a complex attack at a hotel in the Westlands area on January 15. The terrorist group Al-Shabaab later issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, which killed 21 people.
