DR Congo News Alert

Ongoing student protest in Lubumbashi January 28; avoid all gatherings

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/28/2019, 12:00 AM until 1/29/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Kinshasa). COUNTRY/REGION DRC

A protest organised by students from the Lubumbashi University (UNILU) is reportedly ongoing in Lubumbashi (Haut-Katanga province) as of Monday, January 28. Students are reportedly burning tyres on roads leading to the city center to denounce ongoing water and power cuts at the university campus.

On January 27, clashes erupted between students and police forces, leading to the death of one police officer and one student.

Further protests are possible in the coming days. A heightened security presence is likely around any demonstration. Clashes between supporters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in Lubumbashi are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence and arrest, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
