Nigeria News Alert

Anti-government protest to take place in Abuja January 28; avoid all gatherings

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/28/2019, 12:00 AM until 1/30/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Lagos

An anti-government protest to denounce the recent dismissal of chief justice, Walter Onnoghen, is scheduled to take place in the capital Abuja, on Monday, January 28. Protesters are expected to gather at the Unity Fontain. A heightened security presence along with associated transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the protest. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

On January 26, hundreds of protesters reportedly protested in front of the US embassy in Abuja, calling for the US to intervene in the crisis. Further such protests are possible in the coming hours and days.

Onnoghen was suspended on January 25 after being accused of false assets declaration. He is expected to challenge its suspension in court on January 28.

Individuals in Abuja are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of violence.
