TIMEFRAME expected from 1/30/2019, 12:00 AM until 1/31/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Johannesburg). COUNTRY/REGION Gauteng province

Civil society groups are planning to hold a protest outside the office of a major telecommunications company in Midrand (Gauteng province) on Thursday, January 31. The demonstration, being held under the name “Please Call Me,” will begin at 10:00 (local time). According to local media reports, employees have been asked to work from home to avoid the protest. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected in the area.

The “Please Call Me” movement was created in support of a former employee who developed a service for the company in 2007. Supporters claim that the employee is owed 70 billion rand (5 billion USD) and the company has failed to pay him for the invention. The group has threatened to continue to hold protests until the former employee is compensated.

Individuals in Midrand are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and budget additional time to reach their destination if traveling through the affected area.
