The Ethiopian government imposed a nighttime curfew in the city of Jijiga (Somali region) on Wednesday, January 30, following a rise in interethnic tensions. According to local media reports, the curfew was announced after clashes broke out between the Amhara and Somali communities. At least two people were reportedly killed in the fighting after the police intervened. Joint security forces have been deployed into some of Jijiga’s neighborhoods in an effort to prevent further violence. A heightened security presence is expected in the city in the coming days. Additional clashes between rival communities and with security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

According to media reports, the recent clashes between the Amhara and Somali communities were instigated by an attack on a bus carrying Christian pilgrims.
