The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) is planning a political rally in Kolkata (West Bengal state) on Sunday, February 3. The event is scheduled to be held at the Brigade Parade Ground. Crowded conditions, localized transportation disruptions, and a heightened security presence is expected; clashes between CPI-M supporters and political rivals during and following the event cannot be ruled out.
India is set to hold general elections in April and May of 2019. A collection of opposition parties also held a political rally in Kolkata on January 26 that drew more than 500,000 people; on January 29, three people were injured in clashes between rival political groups following a rally in East Midnapore district.
Individuals in Kolkata, and West Bengal more generally, are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, crowded conditions, and a heightened security presence, and avoid all political demonstrations as a precaution.
