Clashes broke out between Congolese army soldiers and Maï-Maï militiamen in Beni (North Kivu province) on Thursday, January 31, as the soldiers attempted to eradicate two Maï-Maï positions in the city. According to an army statement issued on Saturday, February 2, at least 20 Maï-Maï militiamen and two soldiers were killed in the fighting. Similar security operations and clashes between Congolese soldiers and Maï-Maï militiamen are possible in North Kivu province over the near term.

The Congolese government's limited presence in the eastern provinces, including North Kivu, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias (Maï-Maï militias) have led to major security issues in the area.

Individuals in North Kivu province, particularly near Beni, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for violent activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
