Violent clashes broke out between rival ethnic communities in Mandiana prefecture on Saturday, February 2, resulting in at least six fatalities. The fighting occurred between residents of the villages of Tignikoura and Sidikila in a gold mining area. Additional security forces were deployed to the region to prevent further violence. Additional clashes between the two communities or with security forces are possible in the near term.


Both communities claim ownership of gold mining areas in Mandiana prefecture. According to media reports, clashes over the mines have taken place over the past 20 years.


Individuals in Guinea are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the area of the fighting, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
