Unidentified gunmen attacked a security checkpoint near the town of Al-Kharga (New Valley/Wadi Al-Gadid province) on Tuesday, February 5. According to security officials, at least four police officers were wounded in the firefight. A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in Al-Kharga in the coming hours and days. Further attacks by militant groups are possible in the area in the near term.  


Individuals in Egypt are advised to monitor the situation, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments, report suspicious behavior and objects to the authorities, remain vigilant when visiting areas vulnerable to terrorist attacks (e.g. tourist sites, churches, international and government buildings, public transportation hubs, etc.), and anticipate similar security operations in the near term.
