Violent student protests continue in Durban on February 6; avoid all gatherings

Violent student protests are ongoing in Durban as of Wednesday, February 6, notably around the University of Technology. Protesters are denouncing the killing of a student by a campus security guard the day prior. A heightened security presence along with associated transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the protest. Clashes between security forces and students cannot be ruled out. Furhter protests are possible in the coming days.


Protests to denounce the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding system have been ongoing since February 4, with students blocking roads in several areas of Durban with burning tyres and debris. At least 29 people were arrested.


Individuals in Durban are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and budget additional time to reach their destination if traveling through the affected area.
