Guinea: Opposition protest in Conakry's Matoto district Feb. 7

Guinea News Alert

Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG) protest in the Matoto district of Conakry February 7; heightened security measures expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 2/7/2019, 12:00 AM until 2/8/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Conakry). COUNTRY/REGION Conakry

The Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG) opposition party is planning to hold a protest in the Matoto district of the capital Conakry on Thursday, February 7. UFDG leaders intend to denounce the local rerun of mayoral elections that are expected to be held on Thursday, following perceived irregularities. Heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are anticipated throughout the city during the demonstration.

The UFDG denounces the rerun, claiming their candidate had already won the polls held in December 2018.

On a related note, opposition protests have been held since mid-October to denounce the government of President Alpha Condé and the fact that some officials elected in controversial local elections held February 4 have not yet been sworn in. At least 100 people have been killed in clashes with security forces since Condé took power in 2010.

Individuals in Conakry are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations and protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
