As of Friday, February 8, local authorities have issued an avalanche warning for 16 out of the 22 districts of the Jammu and Kashmir state. The warning will remain place until at least February 9. Areas particularly affected include the districts of Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kulgam and Kupwara. On a related note, an avalanche hit the north portal of Jawahar Tunnel on the Qazigund side, on Thursday evening (local time), February 7, trapping ten security personnels.
Kashmir valley has been affected by heavy snowfall since Wednesday, February 6. Several districts in the area have received as much as 5 ft (150 cm) of snow.
Individuals in Jammu & Kashmir are advised to monitor local weather forecasts, prepare for lingering transportation disruptions, and confirm flight reservations. As a reminder, individuals present in Kashmir are advised to exercise caution while driving, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. Some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Kashmir, notably including areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
