The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.9-magnitude earthquake off Siargao Island (Surigao del Norte province) at 19:55 (local time) on Friday, February 8. At least three aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.7 to 5.1 were subsequently recorded between 20:29 to 20:45. No damages or casualties have been immediately reported, and no tsunami warning was issued. Additional aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.
In the event of further earthquakes and aftershocks, individuals should protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls (ideally in a corner), and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
