Spain News Alert

Opposition parties plan protests in Madrid’s Plaza de Colón on February 10 to demand resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez; localized disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 2/7/2019, 12:00 AM until 2/10/2019, 11:59 PM (Europe/Madrid). COUNTRY/REGION Plaza de Colón (Madrid)

Political opposition parties are planning to hold a protest in Madrid on Sunday, February 10, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The event, which is being organized by the right-wing and center-right parties Popular Party (PP), Ciudadanos, and Vox, is scheduled to begin at 11:00 (local time) at Plaza de Colón. Related, smaller demonstrations are also expected in other cities across the country. Organizers claim that 20,000 people will attend the protest. A heightened security presence and localized transportation and business disruptions are expected near the Plaza de Colón.

The parties claim Sánchez is betraying Spain by accepting a mediator in the dispute with Catalonian separatists. All three parties are opposed to an independent Catalan.

Individuals in Madrid are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions.
