5.1-magnitude earthquake hits the Bay of Bengal February 12; no casualty reported

In the morning (local time), of Tuesday February 12, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Bay of Bengal. No casualties or major damage to properties were reported, and no tsunami warning was issued. Mild tremors were also felt in Chennai, notably in areas located near the coast, as the earthquake occured some 600 km ( 370 mi) east-northeast from the city.


The Indian subcontinent has a long history of earthquakes. Geographical statistics of India show that over half of the land is vulnerable to earthquakes.


Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation, be prepared for further aftershocks, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. During an earthquake, people are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from any tall structures, such as buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
