Taxi drivers affiliated with the Confederation of Authorized Operators and Carriers in Romania (COTAR) group are planning to stage a protest on Piaţa Victoriei, in front of Palatul Victoria (seat of the Government of Romania), in Bucharest on Wednesday, February 13. Some 2000 taxis are anticipated to be parked at the site from 09:00 to 15:00 (local time) in protest of the government's perceived unwillingness to constrain competition from ride-sharing services (e.g. Uber, Taxify, BlaBlaCar, etc.). Similar protests are to be expected in other Romanian cities on Wednesday, including in Arad, Timişoara, Iaşi, Bacău, Braşov, Târgu Mureş, Zalău, and Slatina.
COTAR has also threatened to hold additional demonstrations on February 27-28 if the government does not adequately address its concerns following the February 13 protests.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near protest sites.
Individuals in Bucharest and other affected cities are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, budget additional time to travel around protest sites, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
