Anti-government protesters supportive of the political opposition staged a demonstration in front of the Kryeministria, which houses the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama, in Tirana on Saturday, February 16, demanding that he resign and denouncing perceived inadequate economic development and corruption. The opposition supporters reportedly threw Molotov cocktails and flares during the protest, breaking through a police cordon, and attempted to ram their way into the government building. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. At least 15 people, including seven police officers, were wounded in the clashes.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours. Additional clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in Tirana are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
