A series of underground explosions and fire emanating from manhole covers prompted evacuations and road closures in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City (New York) on the evening (local time) of Saturday, February 16. Eyewitnesses reported seeing tall flames shooting out of multiple manholes around West 50th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan around 20:00. Authorities closed 50th Street from 8th to 10th Avenues and patrons evacuated from the nearby New Worlds Stage. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) reported that C and E trains would skip the 50th Street Station; bus routes in the area are diverted and reportedly delayed. Residual transportation disruptions are possible in the coming hours. Emergency response teams are on the scene; the cause of the fire has not been determined.
