A fire left at least nine people dead and over 50 others injured in Chittagong after igniting in the Bhera Market slum area early (local time) on Sunday, February 17. Firefighters battled the blaze for five hours before putting it out. A short circuit may have started the fire, according to a preliminary investigation into the incident.
Bangladesh has a relatively poor fire safety history and fires routinely ignite in low-income areas, killing hundreds of people annually.
Individuals in Chittagong are advised to take fire safety precautions and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
