Clashes between security forces and NPA militants reported in Misamis Occidental province on February 18

New People's Army (NPA) militants reportedly clashed with security forces in the Barangay San Pedro area of Misamis Occidental province on Monday, February 18. According to security officials, at least one NPA militant was killed in the fighting. Further clashes between militants and security forces cannot be ruled out.


The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), founded in 1969, that seeks to bring a communist revolution to the Philippines through revolutionary taxation and guerrilla insurgency. The group is mainly active in Mindanao and has been designated as a terrorist group by the US, EU, and the Philippines.
