Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was arrested on money-laundering and embezzlement charges in the capital Malé on Monday, February 18. Demonstrations by opposition members and supporters of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom are possible throughout the Maldives, notably Malé, in the coming days. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be expected near any protest.


In February 2018, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was arrested over allegations of conspiring to overthrow the government, before being released on bail in September 2018.


Individuals present in the Maldives, notably Malé, are advised to avoid all public gatherings and rallies, keep abreast of the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
