Teachers and supporters of the Extinction Rebellion civil society group are slated to demonstrate in London on Friday, February 22, to demand reforms to curricula such that climate and ecological issues are given priority in teaching. Organizers have called on participants to gather at Old Palace Yard at 12:00 (local time) and march to the Department for Education building, where an associated rally will be held. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near the demonstration sites and along the march route.
Thousands of students participated in nationwide demonstrations on February 15 to demand that authorities take action to curb climate change. Students in 40 cities across the country, including London, staged walkouts for three hours. Similar protest campaigns have been organized by students in Sweden, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia. A second day of demonstrations is also expected to be held in the UK and other countries on March 15.
Individuals in London are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests, budget extra time to reach their destinations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
