Suspected Islamist militants attacked an oil company convoy near the village of Mute (Cabo Delgado province), close to Palma, on Thursday, February 21, wounding at least four people. According to local sources, several other attacks were reported on Thursday in villages between Mocimboa da Praia and the Afungi Peninsula. Government forces have been deployed to the area to augment security. Similar attacks targeting oil workers are expected in Cabo Delgado province over the near term.
Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017.
