A demonstration organized by the Frente Guasu and the Partido Comunista Paraguayo is slated to begin at 19:00 (local time) in front of the US Embassy in Asunción on Friday, February 22, to denounce US foreign policy vis-à-vis Venezuela. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are likely near the demonstration site. Similar protests cannot be ruled out.
The current crisis in Venezuela was spurred by Nicolás Maduro's inauguration to a second term as president on January 10 following last year's contested election, prompting the National Assembly to declare a national emergency. At least 50 foreign governments, including the US, Canada, and Brazil, among others, have since recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the interim head of state. Guaidó indicated that opposition leadership is in contact with military officials and foreign governments to discuss ousting Maduro, although he has declined to provide additional details.
Individuals in Asunción are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
