Senegal’s National Vote Counting Commission announced on Thursday, February 28, that Macky Sall secured 58 percent of the vote in the recent presidential election. Opposition candidates Idrissa Seck and Ousmane Sonko received 21 percent and 16 percent of the vote, respectively. Candidates have 72 hours to file an appeal with the Constitutional Court. Since the polling on Sunday, February 24, opposition leaders have rejected reports of Sall’s majority win, but it is unclear if they will file an appeal.

Political demonstrations are possible in Dakar and other Senegalese cities over the coming days. Heightened security measures and transportation disruptions are expected near demonstration sites. Clashes between supporters of different political parties are possible in the coming days.

The February 24 elections were reportedly held without major incident, although there were some reports of voting irregularities. Incumbent President Macky Sall is reportedly leading in preliminary vote tallies, with two major opposition figures - former Mayor of Dakar Khalifa Sall and former Minister Karim Wade - prohibited from running for office over corruption convictions.

Individuals in Senegal are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and political rallies due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
