Haiti: National Carnival canceled February 27

Haiti News Alert

Ministry of Culture cancels annual National Carnival events on February 27 due to recent violence; March 4-5 remain public holidays

TIMEFRAME expected from 3/1/2019, 12:00 AM until 3/5/2019, 11:59 PM (America/Port-au-Prince). COUNTRY/REGION Haiti

Haiti’s Minister of Culture, Jean Michel Lapin, announced on Wednesday, February 27, that the National Carnival in Gonaïves has been canceled due to the recent violent unrest. The carnival was originally scheduled to start on Sunday, March 3, but according to Lapin there has not been enough time for the government to organize the festivities. Carnival parades planned in Port-au-Prince and Pétionville have also been canceled. However, Monday, March 4, and Tuesday, March 5, will remain public holidays and citizens can participate in other celebrations.

Violent demonstrations associated with so-called "Operation lock down Haiti" began February 7 with demonstrators erecting roadblocks, burning tires, and throwing rocks at security forces nationwide. At least eight people have been killed in the demonstrations, with dozens of others suffering injuries.

Individuals in Haiti are advised to keep abreast of the situation, strictly avoid all protests and associated roadblocks due to the likelihood of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments (e.g. travel restrictions). Be prepared to shelter in place in the event of prolonged civil unrest (e.g. stockpile supplies of preserved foods and fresh water).
