Event

The opposition Democratic Party of Albania has called for a protest to take place in front of the parliament building in Tirana starting at 10:00 (local time) on Tuesday, March 5, despite Albania's police forces decision to ban demonstrations due to security concerns. Other gatherings are possible in front of the prime minister's office and other government buildings. Demonstrators will be protesting while the parliament is in session to denounce the government's perceived crimes and corruption. A significant police presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the protest sites.

Furthermore, the party has called for similar nationwide protests to take place on Saturday, March 16.

Similar protests are possible in Tirana over the near term. Associated clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

Opposition supporters have held several demonstrations in Tirana in recent weeks outside of the parliament building to denounce perceived government corruption and demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Clashes between protesters and police were reported during a related demonstration in Tirana on February 16, with demonstrators throwing Molotov cocktails and attempting to storm the building that houses the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama (Kryeministria). At least 15 people were wounded. Demonstrations also took place outside parliament on February 21.

Advice

Individuals in Albania, particularly in Tirana, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
