On Wednesday, March 5, weather officials issued orange weather alerts (the second-highest on a four-tier scale) for strong winds, heavy rains, and strong waves (up to 9 meters high) in most coastal regions in northern and central Portugal, including Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Leiria, Lisboa, Porto, and Viana do Castelo. According to the European National Meteorological Services (meteoalarm), the alerts will be in effect through Thursday, March 7. Related transportation disruptions and hazardous driving conditions along the coast are possible. The inclement weather conditions also reportedly affected the Madeira island region, which had to divert some flights to the capital Lisbon due to strong winds.
Individuals in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of weather alerts, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
